Over the course of six months, from fall 2008 to summer 2009, five suburban teenagers pulled off a now-infamous heist. They stole an alleged $3 million in cash, jewellery, clothes, and other goods from celebrities like Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Lindsay Lohan, and Rachel Bilson.

The burglary gang quickly caught the attention of their intended victims: Hollywood. Sofia Coppola famously made The Bling Ring in 2013 (which still sprouts think pieces today); more recently, Netflix took on a documentarian lens with The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist.

Missing from the latter was Rachel Lee, the alleged mastermind behind the operation. But now, HBO has moved Lee into the spotlight, apparently ready to tell-all. Created by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Erin Lee Carr, documentary The Ringleader: The Case of the Bling Ring is here, with Lee revealing her side of the robberies and her teenage fascination with celebrity for the first time.

How to watch: The Ringleader: The Case of the Bling Ring premiere on HBO on Oct. 1.
